    For me, when I purchased the Leica Apo 35 Summicron it was a religious revelation. Outrageous price but wonderful results. Had the close focus Summilux version before and never liked it greatly. Found an Apo sat on a dealer shelf and a deal was done. Don’t miss the f1.4 at all on an M11-P and it produces amazing quality.

    Interesting that I stumble over your video just tonight, after having a photo walk down town when I tried for the first time to shoot photos with my right arm and the camera dangling at my side, so shooting in a right angle while walking by. At the moment I'm using a Sony Alpha 7 with a battery grip attached. Together with that vintage Carl Zeiss Jena 4 / 20 mm it was not at all the right equipment to keep a low visual profile while shooting, but I wanted to check it out. First views on the camera display look quite promising.

    I feel a lot of "in camera" composition comes from training your eye and gaining a "feel" for the composition technique. When you are cropping your photos in post, you can always make your photo "fit" a composition and this ultimate helps you train your eye and gain that feel...but as many photographers will tell you, "you can'y polish a turd". Ultimately, as you gain more experience, you'll be able to crop more in camera and less in post.

      @@WalkLikeAlice thanks. This video profoundly affected my approach to photography. I never tried street photography, especially B&W with only one prime glass. I was lucky today - drove down to the car boot sale in Carnforth that actually was off, so we decided with my girls to visit Kendal for a change. I had my D610 and an old 50mm 1.4, however, it was a little bit slow with autofocus shooting from the hip (the d610 doesn't have a flip screen), but I visited a local CEX seconds hand shop and they had a 50mm 1.4G. Damn best purchase since I don't remember when. I managed to pull some really nice shots in Kendal, and then on the way back (I'm from the Bolton area) we stopped in Morecambe - the gallery of characters there was really interesting and catching their moments in B&W prime 50mm - just amazing. Thanks for being an inspiration. Cheers

    I just got myself the original M Monochrom. I was wondering if you shoot in manual or aperture priority mode? Also, how are you metering? I have been metering under to where I have the arrow and the dot just appears. Seems to give me the most consistent results. As far as focal length, I am about 50/50 between the 35mm and 50mm on my M11, M9M, and M5. My focal length choice usually falls upon two factors -- where I am shooting and my mood. Always love your vids!

    Great video! I haven’t done a lot of street photography in the last few years, as I haven’t been close to a city to do the work. But several years ago I lived in San Francisco, which is an ideal city to do this kind of work. My technique was very similar, walking through the city and moving towards the action rather than wait for people to come to me. After a while , you can develop lighting reflexes and capture things that only come together for a fraction of a second. Again, great video and great work!

    I’ve just stumbled across this video (thank you algorithm). Have liked and subscribed. I really appreciated both your style and the practicality of your advice, and also loved your work (will seek out more). I’m not confident or competent from the hip. Actually, I’m still working on my equivalent of your earlier, more static style, and enjoying that. But really interesting tips, and will be trying again with more consistent-depth field-focusing. For me, the key attraction to this technique is wrt your comment about being non-confrontational. I don’t like pointing a camera at people going about their private lives. I do like the art that can result. Squaring that circle in an authentic and considered way is really interesting.

    Photographing people in public can be a big challenge for some photographers and there's no right or wrong method. The only thing that matters is enjoying what you do and ofcourse, the final image. Shooting from the hip is a great technique that with practice can be just as precise as if you look through the viewfinder. Great video.

    Sensational photography. Love the girl surrounded by the her brothers/family and the three girls and the mural. I noticed you mentioned that shooting into the sun simplified scenes. I always thought if you have the sun behind it would illuminate and bring out features in your subject/faces more?

    • @WalkLikeAlice
      @WalkLikeAlice 10 дней назад

      Thank you. With b/w the sun becomes difficult to work with if it’s behind you. Everything gets illuminated and you end up with areas of high contrast with little to separate the tones within the scene. Generally speaking, higher contrast means less tonal range and less separation of elements in the frame. With colour you can get away with it as the colour helps to separate the elements, and the stronger light increases the saturation of the colours.
